The marine environment in Wales is one of the country’s most valuable natural assets, supporting biodiversity, climate resilience and coastal communities. However, long-term funding is needed to protect and enhance our marine and coastal ecosystems in the face of increasing pressures such as climate change.
Recent estimates show a significant funding gap for the work needed to restore coastal and marine ecosystems in Wales, highlighting the need for new and reliable sources of support.
MARINE (Marine Resilience and Improvement of Natural Ecosystems) Fund Cymru is a new fund designed to secure voluntary[1] contributions from those who want to support the recovery of Wales’s marine and coastal ecosystems. This funding is then distributed through grants to marine and coastal resilience projects across Wales.
For businesses, contributing to the fund is a way to make a tangible, long-term difference to the marine environment they depend on. It demonstrates a credible commitment to environmental responsibility and supports the sustainable development of Wales’s blue economy.
[1] A voluntary contribution in this case is one that is not compensation or mitigation linked to regulatory requirements. The intention is that MARINE Fund Cymru is voluntary funding separate from statutory obligations.
